TERMEZ

Population: Over 62,000 people. Termez, established by Baktris on the riverbanks of Oxus (Amudarya), was the city of Hellenistic culture. Its inhabitants spoke Persian, Greek and Scythian languages. In markets they traded using coins engraved with images of Indian Gods. When Arabs came the city became the center of Islam. During Amir Timur's time Termez continued to prosper, however it was destroyed at the end of the 17th century AD. In 1897 the modern city emerged with Russian fortress and garrison.

Among amateurs of archeology Termez is known as an ancient center of Baktrian civilization, as well as center of Buddhist ideology. There is a wide archeological activity on the excavation sights all around Termez.

The history of Termez is rich and distinctive. The museum on Pedagogical Street will tell you about tools of labor and weapons of Stone Age, ancient ceramics and coins. Zurmala Tower will reveal secrets of the most ancient architecture of Central Asia of that period.

Do not please pass by Mausoleum of Al - Khakim at Termiziy. According to history, he was born in the year of 748 and he was known as philosopher and mathematician who succeeded to combine mysticism and science together.
