| TERMEZ Population:
Over 62,000 people. Termez, established by Baktris on the riverbanks of Oxus (Amudarya),
was the city of Hellenistic culture. Its inhabitants spoke Persian, Greek and
Scythian languages. In markets they traded using coins engraved with images of
Indian Gods. When Arabs came the city became the center of Islam. During Amir
Timur's time Termez continued to prosper, however it was destroyed at the end
of the 17th century AD. In 1897 the modern city emerged with Russian fortress
and garrison.
Among amateurs of archeology Termez is known as an ancient
center of Baktrian civilization, as well as center of Buddhist ideology. There
is a wide archeological activity on the excavation sights all around Termez.
The
history of Termez is rich and distinctive. The museum on Pedagogical Street will
tell you about tools of labor and weapons of Stone Age, ancient ceramics and coins.
Zurmala Tower will reveal secrets of the most ancient architecture of Central
Asia of that period.
Do not please pass by Mausoleum of Al - Khakim at
Termiziy. According to history, he was born in the year of 748 and he was known
as philosopher and mathematician who succeeded to combine mysticism and science
together.
